Marked

There are moments in life that shape you. Moments that shift your direction, your mindset, even your identity. But nothing compares to a true encounter with God. When His presence fills a room, it changes everything. Not just emotionally, but spiritually and permanently.

It is possible to gather, sing, and hear a message and still miss the most important thing. Without the Holy Spirit, it is just another moment. But when God moves, it becomes a defining one.

Throughout Scripture, we see that encounters with God are not always expected. They often happen in the middle of ordinary or even difficult moments. That is why we have to stay ready. One encounter can change your life forever.

In Genesis 32, we find Jacob at one of the lowest points of his life. He is running from his past, preparing to face his brother Esau after years of deception and betrayal. Jacob had built a life marked by manipulation and dishonesty. He was known for taking what was not his and running from the consequences.

But everything changes in one night.

Alone by the river, Jacob wrestles with God. It is a strange and powerful moment. They wrestle until daybreak, and just when it seems like nothing will stop Jacob, God touches his hip and throws it out of place. From that moment on, Jacob walks with a limp.

That detail matters.

Before the encounter, Jacob walks one way. After the encounter, he walks differently. Physically, yes. But more importantly, spiritually. His identity changes. His name changes. His life changes.

When God marks someone, they do not stay the same.

So what does it actually look like to be marked by God?

First, there is fruit.

Jesus makes it clear that you can recognize a true follower by the fruit in their life. This is not about perfection, but it is about evidence. When someone is truly connected to Jesus, change begins to happen. Desires shift. Priorities realign. The way you speak, think, and treat people starts to look different.

Fruit is not something you manufacture. It is something that grows when you stay connected to the source. When you abide in Jesus, His life begins to show up in yours. Over time, it becomes evident that something is different.

Second, there is obedience in every season.

Obedience is one of the hardest parts of following Jesus. It is easy to obey when it is convenient or comfortable. It is much harder when it costs something.

But Jesus made it simple. If you love Him, you will obey Him.

That means obedience is not selective. It is not delayed. It is not half-hearted. True obedience is complete surrender. It is trusting God enough to let go of what you want in order to follow what He says.

Many people do not reject Jesus outright. They just try to follow Him while holding onto everything else. But a real relationship with Him requires full surrender.

Third, it leaves no doubt.

When someone truly encounters God, there is a noticeable difference. You cannot experience His presence and go back to living the same way without tension. There is a clear contrast between who you were before and who you are becoming.

Jacob did not walk away the same, and neither do we.

When God marks your life, it is not an invitation to stay where you are. It is a call to something higher. It is transformation. It is becoming who He created you to be.

And yes, sometimes that transformation comes with a limp. Sometimes it costs something. But it is always worth it.

Because there is a blessing in the marking.

When Jacob refused to let go, he said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” In that moment, God gave him a new identity. He was no longer Jacob, the deceiver. He became Israel, one who wrestles with God and overcomes.

That is what God does. He takes what was broken, running, and unlikely, and turns it into something purposeful.

There comes a moment for all of us where we have to decide. Do we keep running, or do we surrender?

The truth is, you are never too far gone. One moment in the presence of God can change everything. And years from now, you may look back on that moment and realize it was the turning point where your life was marked forever.

You may not walk the same. You may not talk the same. You may not live the same.

And that is the point, that when God does something so supernatural in our lives, it changes us forever.
